I’ve spent the past few days troubleshooting an issue related to installing a specific update KB5066836 on several servers. The update seems to install successfully, but during the reboot process, it fails at around 90% completion and rolls back the changes. Unfortunately, rebuilding the servers isn’t an option.
I’ve already tried resetting the Windows Update components, running DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow, as well as manually installing the update — but the installation continues to fail.
Before proceeding with detailed troubleshooting steps, please review the following key points:
Preliminary Checks
(1) Ensure the C: drive has at least 15 GB of free space.
(2) Run the following command with administrative privileges:
sfc /scannow
If the above doesn’t resolve the issue, follow the additional steps below.
Advanced Steps
(1) Take a backup of the registry before making any changes.
(2) Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run the command:
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Publishers\{53e3d721-2aa0-4743-b2db-299d872b8e3d}" /f
If you encounter an error, run the following additional command:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels\Microsoft-Windows-Store/Operational
(3) Reboot the server.
(4) Reattempt the patch installation and reboot once more.
The steps above should ideally resolve the issue and allow the update to install successfully. ✌
